Gibt es eine andere, bessere Zukunft – eine jenseits von Armut und segregierten Schulklassen? Über einen Zeitraum von zwei Jahren nehmen Schülerinnen und Schüler der achten Klassen aus der Roma-Siedlung Piškorovec in der Gemeinde Mala Subotica (Međimurje) an Film- und Theaterworkshops teil, die von Roma-Aktivist*innen geleitet werden. Zwischen Träumen und Realität hin- und hergerissen, sich gegenseitig stärkend, suchen sie gemeinsam nach Antworten.
Der Langdokumentarfilm LUME CARA ĂJ ĂM NJENČIM – DIE WELT LIEGT VOR MIR vermittelt vor allem die Perspektive der Kinder auf das Thema der Bildungssegregation und informiert und warnt zugleich die Öffentlichkeit. Das Projekt befindet sich seit 2022 in Produktion und wird mit Unterstützung des Kroatischen Audiovisuellen Zentrums (HAVC), der Stadt Zagreb und des Verbands der Roma in der Republik Kroatien Kali Sara realisiert. Der Film befindet sich derzeit in der Postproduktion; der Abschluss wird für Ende Januar 2026 erwartet.
Der Film entsteht als Community-Film, in dem die Protagonistinnen aktiv am Entstehungsprozess beteiligt sind – sowohl die Schülerinnen selbst als auch die Roma-Aktivist*innen.
Die dokumentierten Workshops finden jedes Jahr regelmäßig mit Unterstützung des Ministeriums für Kultur und Medien statt, in Zusammenarbeit mit der Grundschule in Mala Subotica. Durchgeführt werden sie von Mitgliedern von ROM.HR – Roma-Jugendorganisation Kroatiens: Marina Horvat, Severina Lajtman, Siniša Senad Musić und Rosa Oršuš Miletić, mit Unterstützung des Offenen Kunstlabors (Otvoreni likovni pogon). Der fachliche Berater Benjamin Ignac ist ebenfalls Mitglied der Roma-Bajaši-Gemeinschaft aus Međimurje und lebt derzeit in Berlin. Regie und Drehbuch stammen von Kristina Leko, die mit partizipativen Methoden arbeitet.

Feature-Length Documentary Film LUME CARA ĂJ ĂM NJENČIM – THE WORLD IS BEFORE ME 2025
Is there another, better future – one beyond poverty and segregated classrooms? Over the course of two years, eighth-grade students from the Roma settlement of Piškorovec, in the municipality of Mala Subotica (Međimurje, Croatia), take part in film and theatre workshops led by Roma activists. Torn between dreams and reality, strengthening one another, they search for answers together.
The feature-length documentary LUME CARA ĂJ ĂM NJENČIM – THE WORLD IS BEFORE ME offers primarily a children’s perspective on the issue of educational segregation, while simultaneously informing and warning the wider public. In production since 2022, the film is supported by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre (HAVC), the City of Zagreb, and the Roma Association of the Republic of Croatia Kali Sara. The project is currently in post-production, with completion expected by the end of January 2026.
The film is conceived as a community-based film, with protagonists actively involved in the creative process – including both the students themselves and Roma activists.
The documented workshops take place regularly each year with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Media, in cooperation with the Primary School in Mala Subotica. They are conducted by members of ROM.HR – Roma Youth Organization of Croatia: Marina Horvat, Severina Lajtman, Siniša Senad Musić, and Rosa Oršuš Miletić, with the support of the Open Art Workshop (Otvoreni likovni pogon). The project’s expert advisor, Benjamin Ignac, is also a member of the Roma Bayash community from Međimurje and is currently based in Berlin. The film is directed and written by Kristina Leko, who works with participatory methods.
